Introduction

The Research Centre in Social and Behavioural Sciences (FP-B2S) gathers a team of researchers whose common aim is to study human behaviour from an interdisciplinary standpoint. The study of behaviour stems from psychology as a core part of the centre, but includes other scientific areas that encompass the different real and mediatized contexts where behaviour manifests itself. The FP-B2S centre integrates, therefore, members with diversified scientific formation and interests, who believe in the integration of knowledge as the best path for the innovation of scientific knowledge.

The range of activities of the centre comprehends the contexts where human behaviour acquires further meaning in the process of construing contemporary societies, their progresses and problems, and includes the intimate and social, formal and informal, real and media-conveyed spaces. The centre promotes studies with a critical perspective as to the problems and challenges of contemporary societies, with a special emphasis on the issues of crime and deviation, quality of life, and communication. The main aim of the centre is to develop research that contributes to the advancement of knowledge in social and human sciences in a dedicated and engaged manner. Therefore, the research developed in the Centre is ruled by the triad: Interdisciplinarity-Applicability-Social Commitment.

Interdisciplinarity allows the integration of knowledges and methodologies of different scientific areas in the search for a holistic perspective of social challenges. The research developed in the Centre is also defined by its applicability. It is our understanding that the scientific research in the human and social sciences cannot be restricted to the development of theoretical knowledge, and that it should move on to its application to real contexts, in order to contribute to the social development and quality of life of populations. The third element of the triad, social commitment, represents the essence of the activities developed at an institutional level with support programs for local communities in different areas. This triad guides the studies developed by the researchers at the Centre in the areas of health, education, work, justice, politics and citizenship, and communication.

The FP-B2S organizes the research activities in three lines of investigation. The unit is managed by a Coordinating Committee formed by the General Coordinator, the coordinators of each research lines and the Secretary and has the support of technical and administrative staff.

It is our aim to contribute to a structural and integrative vision of human and social sciences, including different areas articulated towards the production of knowledge. In a world that is increasingly globalised and mediatized we recognize the paramount influence of the mass media and the new information technologies in people’s motivation, attitudes and behaviour, as well as the need to scientifically question the so-called ‘Digital Humanities’ and their ubiquitous presence nowadays. We stand for a science whose role is at the service of social development and at the service of a society which is more capable, fair and integrative, and which responds in an innovative manner to contemporary social challenges.
